“Two in three fail” references:

According to the Standish Group’s CHAOS Report, which analysed over 50,000 projects from 2002 to 2018, the success rate of projects that involve information technology with budgets over $1 million was only 29%. That means 71% of IT projects with budgets over $1 million did not meet their objectives, were over budget, or were not completed on time.

The Oxford Economics and SAP report “Making the Connection: Project Management at the Intersection of Strategy and Execution” found that 64% of large projects (with budgets over $5 million) fail to meet their goals, and that poor project management is the primary cause of failure.

The PMI Pulse of the Profession 2020 report, published by the Project Management Institute (PMI), found that only 23% of organizations reported that all of their projects met their original goals and business intent.

The McKinsey & Company report “Delivering large-scale IT projects on time, on budget, and on value” found that large IT projects are on average 45% over budget and 7% behind schedule, and only 56% of projects are completed on time and within budget.

The University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School conducted a study of large-scale projects across industries, which found that 9 out of 10 projects with budgets exceeding $1 billion go over budget, and that on average, large projects run 62% over budget.
